Ask the Experts: Can You Color Wet Hair?

By SALONORY

Applying Color to Hair

You probably found your way to this article because you’re wondering whether or not you can color your hair if it’s wet. And the short answer is: yes. However, there are many reasons why you may not want to.

If you’re going into a salon for a hair appointment with a stylist who will be using professional hair color, chances are your hair will be colored when it’s dry. Coloring hair when it’s dry allows the color to deeply penetrate the hair and be applied evenly, which is why this method is used more often.

However, there are instances where coloring hair wet can work to your advantage — but more often than not, coloring your hair wet isn’t the best way to get vibrant, long-lasting and even color.

So when is it the right time to color your hair wet? Let’s dive into some examples (no pun intended).

Reasons for Coloring Hair Wet

As we mentioned above, coloring your hair while it’s wet or damp isn’t the preferred or most ideal method, but there are some products and styles that necessitate wet hair. Here is some insight:

  • Using Natural Hair Coloring: If you plan on using natural hair dyes like Henna, you may be instructed to apply the color to wet or damp hair. This is because natural hair dyes like Henna can be applied much easier and more thoroughly on damp hair. So, in this case, your hair being damp is actually recommended to achieve a highly-saturated color.
  • Needing a Quick Wash of Color: Is your hair brown, black or red? If you’re needing a color refresh to boost your hair’s vibrancy, applying a demi permanent hair color to your wet hair for a couple of minutes may give you the boost you’re looking for. While, we would rather recommend seeing your hairstylist for a color glaze or deep conditioning treatment, applying color to your wet hair can give you a quick wash and refresh of your color.
  • Toning Your Color: While you may not think of a blue or purple shampoo as a color, it technically does change your hair color and deposit tiny amounts of color into your hair. So, when you’re using purple or blue shampoo, you are usually applying it in the shower. That’s because toners like this work best on your hair when it’s wet. So, if you’re just needing a quick tone up, we suggest starting with wet hair for this instance.

Cons of Coloring Hair Wet

While there are a few use cases for coloring your hair while it’s wet, there are definitely some cons you should consider before proceeding.

  • Uneven Application: With dry hair, it’s easy to see where you have applied hair color. However, when the hair is wet, it can be difficult to determine where you need to apply the color. This can result in uneven coverage.
  • Hair Color Can Become Diluted: If you want bold color, coloring your hair while it’s wet probably won’t get you to the result you were hoping for. Water can dilute the hair color you’re using — depending on the formula. This has the potential to drastically impact the way your hair looks.
  • More Damage Is Possible: When your hair is wet, it is at its weakest. Therefore, coloring your hair while wet or damp could result in more damage. If you do decide to color wet hair, make sure you are careful when towel drying it or applying heat after as this could make the damage even worse.
  • Hard to Determine Processing Time: Whether your hair is light or dark, it’s hard to tell what the hair actually looks like when it’s wet. Coloring your hair while it’s wet can keep you from determining the correct processing times and it makes it impossible to see how your hair is taking to the color. If you want to have more control over how your hair turns out, coloring it while wet doesn’t give you much of a choice.

Are you ready to color your hair while it’s wet? While there are good use cases for this kind of technique, it’s not always going to be the best method for everyone. We highly recommend seeing your stylist if you’re planning on making a big hair transformation or if you’re thinking about coloring your hair. Hairstylists can ensure that your hair is processed in a healthy way that achieves a stunning end result.
