There’s nothing quite like textured, salty hair that’s been windblown on the beach all day. Though salon-quality texturizing hair products can help replicate the look to a tee, it still requires some effort to get this “effortless” beachy look after the initial hair appointment. For those who style their hair in loose, beachy waves constantly, there is (thankfully) a way to get long-lasting beach waves with less effort via a beach wave perm.

A beach wave perm is the answer to any beachy hair lover’s prayer. Furthermore, a lasting beachy look can save lots of time when it comes to styling, whether it’s with an array of professional hair care products or hot tools like curling irons or wavers. For clients, this treatment is a great way to get a long-lasting beachy look, especially if they have straight hair. For stylists, it’s a unique option to offer clients who might not want a traditional perm with tight, defined curls. Read on for more on how to do a beach wave perm.

The Art of the Beach Wave Perm

Unlike traditional perms of the past, the modern perm takes on a new persona entirely. The current version of the perm (formally known as a “permanent hairstyle” before the term was shortened to “perm”) is the chameleon of hair treatments due to the highly customizable results. Perms are now able to mold to just about any preference, style or level of curl, all while minimizing hair damage to ensure soft and shiny hair regardless of curl tightness. Since tight, stiff curls aren’t necessarily all the rage these days, perms that deliver loose curls or defined waves have become more popular. With textured, messy and perfectly undone hairstyles all over the runway and red carpet lately, it’s no secret why the beach wave perm has gained traction.

The process of administering a beach wave perm looks much like any other perm, although one key point is different: the size of the curls. Instead of narrow, pencil-like rods that were commonly wrapped with hair before adding in the curl activating treatment, beach wave curls are set using much wider rods, tubes, curlers or twists. This way, the curls are chemically set in a loose curl shape that mimics textured beach waves.

Stylists should use only trusted salon-quality brands for perm treatments and aftercare. Zotos hair products and perm kits remain a salon go-to for perms and textured looks because of their reliable product lineup. In addition to customizing curl shape by hand, stylists can choose from multiple perm levels within the Zotos perm portfolio in order to give their clients exactly what they want.

Maintaining a Beach Wave Perm

The rules of perm aftercare are simple and don’t leave room for interpretation. In order to keep curls intact, avoid wetting or shampooing the hair for about two days. From there, many stylists advise against conditioning hair for an additional five to seven days. Frequent contact with chlorine or chemically treated water is another no-no. In short, all of these will shorten the life of the perm and, in turn, cause the beachy waves to deflate prematurely.

Another key in beach wave perm maintenance is to use professional-level hair care products for curly or textured hair in order to keep the perm looking healthy and fresh. Otherwise, maintaining a beach wave perm is all about rocking those textured, natural waves as much as possible!
